Arrival!

Finally the car arrived! I had to take some time off work, more than I would have liked, but I can make that up. The owner, sorry previous owner, bought her up on a trailer.

We backed it up to the garage and rolled her off. With no engine she is very light.  Actually even with an engine I am sure she’ll be very light. Everything was stacked into the garage. I have plenty of room to work around her. Not much more to say until I start stripping it all down but here are some pictures.

The body was built using a welded steel tubing frame and covered in aluminium pop riveted in place. This will probably all go as I want to build my own body. I am still thinking it through but current plans are to make plywood bulkheads joined by stringers then covered in thin ply laminated together. Then that’s covered in fabric, doped and painted.

The car is tiny. With the body it has it is about 1.2m wide and about 2.7m long. I think this body is a bit too narrow. The pedal spacing is unworkable.  And the steering column seems too low. I will need to investigate other specials and see what they are like.

The engine is really cute. Very small but then it is a 750CC. This one is bored out to +60 thou. The valves are apparently bigger than standard and the cam has been given a race grind. The cam is so small. About the diameter of your finger. The Austin 7 engine is different to modern engines in that is has a crankcase (made from aluminium alloy), a cylinder block (containing the cylinders and valve gear) and a cast iron head.

The crank in this engine is a two bearing one. Not sure of the diameter yet. I will need to measure that. Of course the con rods seem to have conflicting marks on them as to numbering. Missing are pistons and gudegon pins which I shall need to get.

The distributor is attached to the end of the dynamo it seems. And the fuel pump is mechanical driven off the camshaft. The starter is, like everything else, quite dinky! There seems to be a floor mounted switch in the pile of parts to engage it.

The car came with two sets of wheels. Four steel wheels and five wires. Hopefully the wires can be blasted and used. Both sets are 17 inch. The speedometer reads up to 80 MPH (about 130kph). Somehow I think that would be terrifying if it’s even possible!

Will get a better look at the chassis once the body is off but this gives some idea of how light it is. Chassis rails are all just folded steel, not even boxed in. Apparently the whole thing will flex, necessary since the suspension isn’t exactly modern! From what I can see of the chassis it is in good condition.

The radiator is a honeycomb one and seems in good nick. The surround is brass and quite wonderful. I think that will have to stay as it is despite the danger of people claiming it’s steampunk.

So now the car is comfortably in the garage. All the parts that came with her (not that many really) are sorted and in boxes. I want a few people to see the car as she is now before I start doing anything but then a complete teardown shall be in order. Will get the body off. Check out her chassis and see what start her running gear is in.
